The story behind the print
This unframed paper poster shows a black cat and a cream dog seated opposite each other at a chessboard. The cat, painted in dense black strokes, looks towards the dog across a board set with dark and orange chess pieces. The dog, rendered in soft cream and beige tones, returns the gaze. The animals are framed by a background of loose green and orange brushmarks that suggest a patterned surface or garden setting.
The artwork uses a painterly, illustrative style with visible brushstrokes and a warm, earthy palette. The chessboard forms the central composition, with the black and orange pieces arranged in opposing rows. The cat and dog are positioned at either side, creating a balanced, symmetrical layout. The background pattern of green and orange adds texture without distracting from the main subjects.
