The story behind the print
This unframed paper print features a black ink illustration of a cat sitting beside a wine glass, with vertical Japanese calligraphy running down the left side. The cat's face is drawn with simple, expressive lines, showing closed eyes and whiskers, while the wine glass is outlined in a loose, gestural style. The composition is minimal, using only black ink on a plain background.
The artwork draws on sumi-e and line-drawing traditions, with uneven, hand-drawn strokes that give it a relaxed, sketch-like quality. The vertical calligraphy adds a typographic element that balances the cat and glass. The monochrome palette keeps the focus on the subject and the contrast between the bold outlines and the empty space around them.
