The story behind the print

This Japanese fish woodblock print shows four koi carp arranged diagonally across a colour-blocked background of teal, mustard and red. Each fish has a cream body with a dense lattice of scales, a round eye and a slightly open mouth. The top and third fish are printed in dark teal, while the second fish is red, creating a rhythmic alternation down the composition.

The print has a visible woodblock texture, with grainy ink coverage and slight edge irregularity that gives it a hand-pulled look. The background is divided into flat rectangular blocks of colour rather than a naturalistic scene, so the fish read as bold graphic shapes. The overall palette is teal, red, mustard and cream, with the fish facing right in a consistent swimming pose.

This artwork is supplied unframed, so the frame is not included. It is printed to order in the UK on 270 gsm premium satin paper using a 12-colour Mimaki UCJV300-160 printer and authentic Mimaki OEM inks. Each print is rolled and packaged by hand and is available in multiple sizes, which can be chosen from the Size selector.
