The story behind the print
This Japanese street poster depicts a steep stone stairway at night, framed by traditional wooden buildings and dense green foliage. Strings of glowing red lanterns hang above the wet steps, their light reflecting across the rain-slicked surfaces. Lit windows and a red vending machine add warm accents to the dark, atmospheric scene.
The composition draws the eye upward along the central staircase, balancing deep greens, charcoal tones and vivid reds. Rain streaks fall across the entire image, creating a layered, cinematic effect. The illustration style captures the quiet mood of a rainy evening in a hillside neighbourhood, with lantern light pooling on each step.
